Caldwell Human Services Building, Caldwell County
Square Footage 121,033 SF
Cost $11,230,000
The new three story state of the art Caldwell Human Services building, located on the county’s facility campus replaces what had been intended as a temporary facility located in a former Sky City shopping center. The new building brings together the Social Services Department and Health Department in a building specifically designed for their use. Clients can now easily find the main entrance and are directed from there to the appropriate department. |
Hickory Fire Station
Square Footage 13,911 SF
Cost $1,226,591
Hickory Fire Station #1, designed in the 1960’s, has received a complete face lift and interior renovation. A small addition will provide space for increased personnel, future expansion and storage. Being in a prominent location, the new façade, incorporating a strong cornice treatment, an entry tower and a standing seam metal roof, complement the traditional character of historic downtown Hickory. The interior renovations provide a large kitchen, private sleeping rooms, and comfortable lounge. |
Statesville Office
Square Footage 13,928 SF
Cost $1,090,791.22
The City needed to renovate a portion of their existing 1950's office building as well as create additional space and add a new drive up window. The building was located on a major street intersection in the historic part of town but did not contribute to the historic feel of the area. The design solution involved replacing existing single glazed windows and adding new windows to create a more harmonious and historic feel. Because the existing brick could not be matched the entire exterior of the existing building and the new addition were veneered with new brick more in keeping with the surroundings. A tan cornice was added to give the building scale.
While the renovation work on the City Office Building was underway a new design for the entire interior or back yard of the block was undertaken. This involved unifying what had been several separate barren parking lots into a single landscaped parking area complete with a defined pedestrian landscaped walk connecting the Police Station, the City Offices and Civic Center which is across the street. A small landscaped park, complete with a fountain and benches, was constructed in an area that had been a poorly designed parking area. The entire project beautifies and unifies what had been a typical hodgepodge "service area”. |
Statesville Police Department
Square Footage 10,986 SF
Cost $310,301
Phase I of the Statesville Police Department included a two-story addition with elevator and exterior renovation. Interior alterations comprised Phase II. The facility remained occupied throughout construction of this project. The schematic phase explored whether to attach an addition or build a free-standing annex. The design incorporates secure prisoner processing, a Salley Port, close-circuit television and visual contact in all public areas. An electronic strike card reader system has been installed for greater security. The design compliments the historic downtown of Statesville as does the Statesville Civic Center also designed by CBSA. |
Wilkes Library
Square Footage 24,000 SF
Cost $2,461,167
The Wilkes County Public Library, completed in 2000, is located in historic downtown North Wilkesboro on a steeply sloped parcel. The program called for space to house standard library functions, a separate genealogy area, a public assembly room seating 100, seasonal display areas, and technology centers throughout. The two-story structure provides street level entry on both floors. The central circular stairwell creates architectural interest while allowing visual supervision of the facility from two main circulation points. A skylight over the stair opening projects natural light into the center of the building and creates a sense of continuity between the levels. The upper level reading area is easily converted for performances and short-term displays while the lower level meeting room seats 100 and has contiguous hospitality service areas. Provision for technology expansion is met with additional conduit and outlets at strategic locations. The floor covering is carpet tile allowing for flat wiring to be added at any time. The upper floor is completely accessible from the ceiling below. |
